The Wampis people live in northwestern Peru, in the jungles of the Andes along the Morona and Santiago rivers, bordering Ecuador. An estimated 70% of the total population of 10,200 people profess Christianity. Work that national missionaries began in 1968 has resulted in two evangelical associations and 64-75 churches. In 1975, the Wampis received their first New Testament.

The needed for a complete Bible in the Wampis language came to the attention of Bibles International in 2021. The Wampis New Testament was being used extensively in their churches, but needed to be updated. In addition, the Wampis needed the Old Testament.

God, in His providence, directed BI to fellow missionary translators in Mexico. They, in turn, directed BI to the individuals who could grant permission to revise the existing Wampis New Testament, and those individuals then gave permission to BI.

With this permission granted, Bibles International was free to adopt the Wampis Bible project in 2023 for a New Testament revision and Old Testament translation. Translator training took place in 2024. God has blessed this translation work with funding for new equipment and two translation offices run on solar power. In the future, BI hopes to have infrastructure in place for online workshops, which will save on consultant wear-and-tear over the three-day journey from the city to the jungle.
