Wampis Bible

  • Location:  Peru
  • Target Completion Date:  TBD

The Wampis people live in northwestern Peru, in the jungles of the Andes along the Morona and Santiago rivers, bordering Ecuador. They have a population of 10,200, 70% of whom would profess Christianity. There are two evangelical associations with around 64-75 churches resulting from the work that national missionaries began in 1968. In 1975, the Wampis received their first New Testament.

This potential project first came to Bibles International’s attention in 2021. After two attempts by BI’s Americas Coordinator, Jim Carlton, to get to the Wampis region, he was finally able to meet with Wampis pastors and church leaders. He discovered that the Wampis New Testament, although used extensively in their churches, was in need of updating, as well as the inclusion of the Old Testament.

God, in His providence, directed Jim to fellow missionary translators while he was in Mexico working on other BI translation projects. They, in turn, directed Jim to the individuals who could and did grant permission to revise the Wampis New Testament.

With this permission granted, Bibles International was free to adopt the Wampis Bible project in 2023 for Old Testament translation and New Testament revision. Translator training is scheduled for 2024.
